Exclusive: Scots actor James McAvoy joins Hollywood's most elite club

ATONEMENT star James McAvoy is to be made a member of the world's most exclusive film club.
He will line up alongside X-Men actor Hugh Jackman and Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle when he is welcomed into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in September.
It means McAvoy, who was brought up in Drumchapel, Glasgow, will be able to vote on who deserves to win an Oscar.
A friend of the actor said: "James was absolutely delighted when he found out he had been invited to become a member.
"It is one of the biggest honours in the industry and shows just how highly rated he is now.
"He can't believe that he will be voting on who wins an Oscar next year.
"It is amazing that a boy from Drumchapel will be rubbing shoulders with the likes of Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise."
McAvoy will be inducted in a star-studded ceremony at the academy's Fairbanks Centre for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills.
Other inductees include Ben Affleck's brother Casey and Spider-Man star James Franco.
McAvoy, 30, was celebrating his latest success on holiday with wife Anne Marie Duff.
He was invited to join after impressing industry bigwigs with his performances in acclaimed hits such as The Last King of Scotland and Atonement, which also starred Keira Knightley.
He will become a member of the organisation's actors' branch, which is headed by Henry Winkler, better known as The Fonz from Happy Days.
An academy spokesman said: "Each branch has standards and criteria by which it evaluates prospective members.
"If an individual is invited, it is because the branch committee and then the academy's board of governors felt that the individual had achieved the required level of distinction and excellence in their field."
Academy president Sid Ganis said the new inductees are the cream of Hollywood's best new talent.
He said: "These film-makers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences.
"It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the academy."
There are fewer than 6000 members of the academy worldwide.
It is made up of the world's top industry talent, including actors, directors, executives and screenwriters.
Other actors in the exclusive club include Will Smith, Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep.
Some of the big-name directors who are members include Peter Jackson, Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese.
